Description

Prominent in the temporal (temple) region, the temporalis forms a broad, fan-shaped muscle sheet on the lateral aspect of the cranium, spanning from the temporal fossa superiorly down to a thick tendon that converges deep to the zygomatic arch. An anterior perspective also brings the masseter into view along the lateral ramus of the mandible, inferior to the zygomatic arch, creating a clear juxtaposition between the vertically oriented masseter fibers and the obliquely radiating temporalis fibers. Superiorly and posteriorly, the temporalis margins track toward the temporal lines of the frontal and parietal bones, while its anterior fibers sit just lateral to the orbit. Right and left sides remain symmetric. A clean landmark. Temporalis anatomy matters because its tendon and deep relationship to the zygomatic arch define common corridors for temporomandibular joint exposure and for coronoidectomy when trismus follows trauma, infection, or radiation fibrosis. Bruxism-related hypertrophy and myofascial trigger points often localize to the anterior temporalis near the frontozygomatic region, and this anterior view helps distinguish temporalis pain referral from masseter-driven symptoms. In teaching mastication, the direction of temporalis fibers explains why the posterior portion contributes to mandibular retrusion while the anterior portion elevates the mandible. Use this artwork for head and neck anatomy modules, dental and maxillofacial surgery texts, and patient education on jaw clenching, TMJ pain patterns, and temporalis tendon involvement under the zygomatic arch. It also fits general muscular system overviews where a female body model with visible mammary tissue provides appropriate context for whole-body muscle relationships.
