Description
Positioned on the lateral skull, the temporalis muscle forms a broad, fan-shaped sheet over the temporal fossa, occupying the region superior to the zygomatic arch and posterior to the lateral orbital rim. Its fibers converge inferiorly into a strong tendon that passes deep to the zygomatic arch to insert on the coronoid process and anterior border of the mandibular ramus. Anterior facial landmarks such as the zygomaticus and orbicularis oris sit anteroinferior to the temporalis, while the auricle lies posterior to it; the sternocleidomastoid descends inferiorly from the mastoid region into the neck. Female breast anatomy is included in profile, with glandular parenchyma embedded in adipose tissue over the anterior thoracic wall. Clear lateral relationships. Clinically, the temporalis matters because it is a primary elevator of the mandible and a major contributor to clenching, so hypertrophy and myofascial trigger points can mimic dental pain and present as temporal headache in temporomandibular disorders. Its deep course beneath the zygomatic arch is also a practical surgical corridor: the muscle is elevated in pterional and frontotemporal craniotomy approaches, where attention to the temporal branches of the facial nerve and postoperative temporalis atrophy affects both function and cosmesis. For dentistry and maxillofacial planning, the tendon’s insertion on the coronoid process explains why coronoid hyperplasia can restrict mouth opening.
