Description
Arising broadly from the temporal fossa, the temporalis spreads in a fan-shaped sheet over the lateral skull, its fibers converging inferiorly to a thick tendon that passes deep to the zygomatic arch toward the coronoid process of the mandible. Anteriorly, orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissure and orbicularis oris forms a muscular sphincter at the mouth, while the masseter occupies the lateral ramus and angle of the mandible, just inferior to the zygomatic bone. Inferior to the mandible, sternocleidomastoid descends obliquely from the mastoid region to the manubrium and medial clavicle, with platysma draped superficially across the anterolateral neck. Portions of deltoid and pectoralis major enter at the superior shoulder and upper chest. Clear fiber directioning. This anterior emphasis is the teaching sweet spot for mastication mechanics because you can relate temporalis fiber orientation to mandibular elevation and retrusion, and then contrast it with the more vertical bite force generated by masseter at the mandibular angle. The temporalis tendon and its path under the zygomatic arch also matter in surgery and trauma, where mandibular coronoid fractures, temporomandibular disorder workups, and approaches near the temporal region must respect the superficial temporal fascia and the nearby course of the temporal branch of the facial nerve. It is a clean way to explain why clenching produces temporal headache patterns and why bruxism can hypertrophy these muscles. Ideal for gross anatomy and head and neck modules, dental and maxillofacial training materials, and clinical handouts discussing TMJ pain, trismus, or masticatory muscle overuse.
