Description
Exposed within an opened calvaria, the male skull is presented with the cranial cavity and nasal region aligned in superior to inferior continuity, allowing the ethmoidal vein to be followed from the ethmoid labyrinth toward the orbit and anterior cranial fossa. Along the medial orbital wall, the anterior and posterior ethmoidal veins are implied as tributaries to the superior ophthalmic vein, coursing adjacent to the ethmoidal foramina at the frontoethmoidal suture, then communicating across the cribriform plate region with small dural veins. Superiorly and posteriorly, blue-rendered dural venous sinuses occupy their expected grooves, with the superior sagittal sinus in the midline and transverse and sigmoid sinuses sweeping laterally and inferiorly. Connections between the nasal cavity, orbit, and intracranial venous channels matter because they explain real routes for infection and hemorrhage. Ethmoidal venous pathways are part of the venous communications implicated in orbital cellulitis from ethmoid sinusitis, and they provide a plausible conduit for intracranial complications when infection tracks from the paranasal sinuses to dural veins. For endoscopic sinus surgery and anterior skull base work, the ethmoidal foramina and adjacent vessels sit at a tight surgical corridor where bleeding can obscure the field and where nearby cribriform plate injury risks cerebrospinal fluid leak. Neuroanatomy and head and neck anatomy courses can use this plate to teach venous drainage in context, not as a free-floating diagram, and to reinforce how bony landmarks guide identification of ethmoidal vessels near the medial orbit. It also suits ENT and neurosurgery teaching files discussing complications of ethmoiditis, anterior cranial fossa exposure, or dural venous sinus orientation in the opened skull.
