Description
Posterior scalp anatomy is rendered with the occipital belly of the occipitofrontalis (occipitalis) picked out beneath intact skin, spanning laterally from the superior nuchal line and mastoid region toward the midline where it blends into the epicranial aponeurosis (galea aponeurotica). The muscle lies superficial to the occipital bone and the upper cervical fascia, while the trapezius forms a broad inferior boundary over the posterior neck and shoulder girdle. Along the posterolateral neck, the contour suggests the underlying sternocleidomastoid as it ascends toward the mastoid process, although it remains secondary to the scalp layer. Skin, subcutaneous tissue, and the fibrous galea create the familiar scalp profile. This posterior emphasis matters because the occipitofrontalis functions as a continuous sheet, with the occipitalis pulling the scalp posteriorly against the frontalis through the galea, a relationship exploited in facial expression analysis and in teaching the layers of the scalp.
