Description
Crossing the superior temporal quadrant of the retina, the superior temporal retinal arteriole is traced from its origin at the optic disc, where the central retinal artery divides on the surface of the optic nerve head. From an anterior perspective through the orbital aperture, the vessel courses superiorly and laterally, arcing away from the nasal side and running in parallel with neighboring superior temporal venules across the inner retinal surface. Surrounding bony landmarks of the skull frame the view, including the orbital rim, the infraorbital foramen inferior to the orbit, and the nasal cavity medially, allowing the ocular fundus anatomy to be oriented within the anterior craniofacial skeleton. For clinicians, isolating this specific retinal arteriole matters because the superior temporal arcade is a common reference when describing funduscopic findings in hypertensive retinopathy, diabetic retinopathy, and branch retinal artery occlusion, where ischemia often respects the distribution of a single arteriolar branch. Its relationship to the optic disc also supports teaching of papilledema assessment and the distinction between arterial narrowing and venous engorgement, and it anchors interpretation of fluorescein angiography or OCT angiography in the superior temporal macula-adjacent region. Small vessel. Big implications. In ophthalmology and neuroanatomy courses, this artwork supports stepwise instruction on central retinal artery branching, quadrant-based localization of retinal pathology, and consistent terminology for charting. It also fits neurosurgery, ENT, and maxillofacial teaching materials that need an anterior skull context for orbital and nasal vascular corridors while keeping attention on the retinal circulation for interdisciplinary correlation.
