Description
Oriented in an inferior view, the maxillary third molar (tooth 18 or 28, depending on side) is isolated as a transparent crown so the occlusal table and cusp pattern can be read from below. The occlusal surface sits superior to the roots and projects into the oral cavity, with the mesiobuccal aspect directed anteriorly and laterally toward the buccal vestibule and the distolingual aspect directed posteriorly and medially toward the palate. Expect a reduced, often rounded occlusal outline compared with the first and second maxillary molars, with variable expression of the distolingual cusp and an irregular central fossa and groove pattern. Variation is the point.
