Description
Beginning at the renal pelvis, each ureter descends retroperitoneally along the posterior abdominal wall, tracking anterior to psoas major and crossing the pelvic brim near the bifurcation of the common iliac vessels before turning anteromedially toward the bladder. The animation follows this superior-to-inferior course and clarifies right-left symmetry while keeping the ureters oriented lateral to the uterus and cervix as they enter the pelvis. Segment by segment, the ureter’s muscular tube and luminal caliber are emphasized as it approaches the vesicoureteral junction. Clear landmarks. Pelvic ureter anatomy in the female is where many operative complications occur, because the ureter passes inferior to the uterine artery within the cardinal (transverse cervical) ligament before running anterolaterally to the urinary bladder, a relationship that drives ureteral injury risk during hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy. Seeing the ureter traced in motion makes the “water under the bridge” crossing easier to teach than a single plate, and it also supports interpretation of obstruction patterns in pregnancy, endometriosis, or pelvic masses that displace the distal ureter. The sequential view also helps explain why distal ureteral stones refer pain to the groin and why vesicoureteral reflux relates to the intramural ureter’s oblique tunnel through the detrusor.
