Description

Beginning at the renal pelvis, each ureter descends retroperitoneally along the anterior surface of the psoas major, with the gonadal vessels crossing anterior to it before the tube reaches the pelvic brim. As the sequence advances, the ureter is tracked as it crosses the common or external iliac vessels near the pelvic inlet, then runs on the lateral pelvic wall toward the bladder. In the female pelvis it passes inferior to the uterine artery within the parametrium at the level of the cervix, then turns anteromedially to enter the bladder wall obliquely as an intramural segment terminating at the trigone. A critical landmark. That relationship to the uterine artery is where iatrogenic ureteral injury clusters during hysterectomy and other uterine artery ligation steps, so seeing the ureter’s changing depth and medial drift in motion makes the risk zone easier to internalize than a single frame. The animation also supports teaching of ureteral peristalsis and the functional importance of the oblique intramural course in limiting vesicoureteral reflux during bladder filling. Points of physiologic narrowing are implicitly reinforced along the path, aligning with common stone impaction sites at the ureteropelvic junction, pelvic brim crossing, and ureterovesical junction.
