Description
Arising from the temporal fossa, the temporalis fans inferiorly toward the coronoid process while the masseter runs vertically from the zygomatic arch to the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus, together framing the angle of the jaw in a lateral female head profile. Superficial muscles of facial expression surround the orbital and oral apertures, with orbicularis oculi encircling the eyelids anterior to the lateral orbital rim and orbicularis oris forming a sphincter at the lips; intervening slips along the cheek blend into the modiolus. Posterior to the auricle, the occipitofrontalis spans from the occipital region toward the forehead across the scalp, and inferiorly the sternocleidomastoid descends obliquely from the mastoid process to the sternum and clavicle with the upper trapezius lying posterior and slightly lateral at the neck-shoulder junction. Fascia and tendinous attachments are suggested where muscle fibers converge and change direction. Lateral orientation matters most for teaching the mechanics of mandibular elevation and protrusion because the temporalis and masseter are best appreciated in profile, including their leverage across the temporomandibular joint and their relationship to the zygomatic arch and mandibular ramus. Bruxism and temporomandibular disorders commonly present with masseter hypertrophy and temporalis tenderness, and this view supports discussions of myofascial pain patterns and injection planning for botulinum toxin in the masseter. Surgical anatomy also benefits: the preauricular region and the mandibular angle are common corridors for TMJ procedures and parotid approaches, where layered anatomy and the proximity of facial expression musculature guide incision placement.
