Description
Seen in lateral profile, the temporalis fans superiorly over the temporal fossa and converges deep to the zygomatic arch toward the coronoid process, while the masseter occupies the lateral mandibular ramus with fibers running inferiorly toward the mandibular angle. Across the cheek and perioral region, the orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissure and the orbicularis oris surrounds the oral fissure, with buccinator lying deep and posterior, forming the muscular wall of the cheek. Inferior to the mandible, the sternocleidomastoid runs obliquely from mastoid process to sternum and clavicle, and posterior to it the upper trapezius ascends toward the occipital region. A faint cranial outline and a translucent hair layer place these myofibers, fascia, and tendinous attachments in realistic surface context. Lateral craniofacial muscle anatomy matters when you need to reconcile what you palpate with what you cut. Masseter and temporalis hypertrophy and tenderness are common in bruxism and temporomandibular disorders, and their fiber direction guides botulinum toxin placement while avoiding the parotid duct and marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve. The sternocleidomastoid is a key landmark for cervical approaches and for understanding congenital muscular torticollis. This is where orientation errors happen fast.
