Description
Cut through a sectioned male kidney, the renal pyramids (pyramides renales, Malpighian pyramids) occupy the renal medulla as conical wedges whose apices project medially as renal papillae into the minor calyces. Peripheral to the pyramids, the renal cortex forms a continuous outer band, while interlobar arteries and veins track superior to inferior within the renal columns between adjacent pyramids before arching at the corticomedullary junction as arcuate vessels. Segmental and lobar branching converges toward the renal sinus, where the funnel of the renal pelvis continues into the proximal ureter. Clear spatial anatomy. This slice is the one you want when teaching how urine formed in collecting ducts drains toward the papilla, and why papillary tips are the vulnerable endpoint in obstructive uropathy. Hydronephrosis preferentially dilates the calyces and pelvis, compressing medullary tissue and blunting papillae, and the pyramids help you localize the level of back pressure relative to the corticomedullary junction. The vascular color-coding also supports discussion of renal infarction patterns, since segmental arterial territories are end-arterial and the medulla tolerates ischemia poorly compared with cortex. Use it in renal anatomy blocks for medical and PA curricula, in nephrology lectures explaining medullary concentrating mechanisms and papillary collecting system anatomy, and in urology or radiology teaching files that correlate calyceal dilation, papillary necrosis, or medullary sponge kidney with gross internal architecture. It also fits cleanly into textbook spreads on renal microcirculation, including interlobar to arcuate transitions and their relationship to pyramidal lobes.
