Paired kidneys are presented with the renal cortex forming the outer envelope and the renal medulla opening into a series of medullary (Malpighian) pyramids whose apices (renal papillae) point medially toward the renal sinus. Urine formed in the pyramids funnels through papillary ducts into minor calyces that converge into major calyces and the renal pelvis, a pale collecting chamber centered at the hilum. From the renal pelvis, the ureter emerges inferiorly and continues as a narrow tubular conduit descending toward the bladder. Bilateral symmetry is maintained, with the collecting system positioned medial to the bulk of the parenchyma. Function meets anatomy at the papilla and pelvis.
