Description
Cut through a male kidney exposes the renal medulla with multiple conical renal pyramids (pyramides renales, pyramids of Malpighi) arranged deep to the renal cortex and oriented with their bases directed peripherally and their papillae projecting medially toward the renal sinus. Collecting ducts (ductus colligentes) converge toward each renal papilla and open into minor calyces, which join as major calyces and then the renal pelvis (pelvis renalis), shown as a pale central funnel. From the inferior aspect of the renal pelvis, the ureter (ureter) continues as a tubular outflow tract and descends inferomedially toward the bladder. The relationship is straightforward: papilla to calyx to pelvis to ureter. For teaching renal urine flow, this view does the job better than a surface-rendered kidney because it keeps attention on the medullary architecture that actually produces a concentrated tubular fluid. Papillary obstruction from a small calculus, sloughed papilla in analgesic nephropathy, or blood clot can impede drainage at the calyceal level and secondarily dilate the collecting system (hydronephrosis), a concept clinicians often explain with the pyramid to pelvis pathway. It also supports discussion of ascending infection, since reflux and stasis tend to involve the renal pelvis and calyces before parenchymal involvement becomes diffuse. Short and concrete. Use it in gross anatomy and renal physiology modules to trace urine from collecting ducts through the calyces into the ureter, or in urology and radiology materials alongside CT urography and intravenous pyelogram diagrams that outline the same collecting system.
