Description
Centered on the male pelvic venous system, the illustration traces paired internal iliac veins converging with the external iliac veins to form the right and left common iliac veins, which unite anterior to the lumbosacral junction as the inferior vena cava. Posterior bony landmarks of the pelvic girdle, including the ilium and sacrum, frame the vessels, while the acetabula and proximal femora establish the relationship to the hip joints. Distally, the femoral venous outflow is suggested as it courses proximally toward the inguinal region, then transitions to the external iliac pathway. Blue venules and larger-caliber veins are layered in an x-ray style against the vertebral column for orientation. Pelvic veins matter because their connections are clinically messy. Collateral channels between internal iliac tributaries, the vertebral venous plexuses, and femoral outflow explain patterns of pelvic venous congestion and varicosities, and they also create routes for tumor spread and septic thrombophlebitis that bypass the inferior vena cava. Ligation, embolization, or inadvertent injury of internal iliac branches can alter venous drainage after pelvic trauma, prostatectomy, or acetabular surgery, and this posteriorly oriented layout helps clarify why bleeding can be brisk and difficult to control. Small mistakes here become big problems. Use this artwork in gross anatomy teaching of the pelvis and hip, in surgical atlases addressing pelvic approaches and retroperitoneal dissection, or in radiology and interventional training materials when correlating MRV/CTV findings with expected iliac confluence anatomy.
