Description
Posterior shoulder anatomy is rendered with the superficial and deep venous pathways crossing the scapular region and draining toward the axilla. Over the deltoid and posterior scapular spine, tributaries track across the acromion and along the infraspinous and supraspinous fossae before converging near the lateral border of the scapula. Medially, smaller venules course toward the dorsal midline, while laterally the larger channels run inferior and anterior toward the axillary vein. Bony relief is clear. This posterior perspective matters when you need to teach venous return patterns around the shoulder girdle and how they relate to palpable landmarks such as the spine of scapula and acromion, where superficial vessels can be injured by laceration or approached for imaging correlation. It also supports discussion of axillary outflow problems, including upper-extremity deep venous thrombosis and venous congestion in thoracic outlet or costoclavicular compression, where collateral drainage may recruit scapular and circumflex pathways.
