Description

Centered within the female pelvis, the uterus sits superior to the vagina and is flanked laterally by the uterine tubes as they course toward the ovaries near the pelvic sidewalls. Inferior and anterior in the vulvar region, the clitoral body (corpus clitoridis) continues posteriorly into paired crura along the ischiopubic rami, while the vestibular bulbs (bulbi vestibuli), homologous to the corpus spongiosum, lie deep to the labia majora on either side of the vaginal orifice. Pelvic bones frame the soft tissues, with vascular channels tracking along the pelvic brim and toward the external genital erectile tissues. Orientation is everything. Depicting the vestibular bulb in context with the internal clitoral anatomy matters because the bulbs and clitoral corpora share erectile function and vascular supply, and their proximity to the urethra and anterior vaginal wall influences both symptom patterns and procedural risk. This anatomy underlies dyspareunia related to vestibular disorders, guides hemostasis during vulvar and perineal surgery where venous plexuses can bleed briskly, and supports accurate counseling around sexual function after obstetric laceration repair or vulvar excision. For teaching, it also corrects the persistent oversimplification of the clitoris as only the glans. Use this illustration in pelvic anatomy and sexual medicine curricula, in gynecology and urogynecology texts discussing vulvar vestibulitis, Bartholin region surgery, or perineal repair, and in patient-facing materials that need a clear depiction of internal clitoral and vestibular erectile tissue relationships. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
