Description
Semi-transparent cardiac rendering highlights the coronary venous network on the surface of a male heart, with the great cardiac vein ascending in the anterior interventricular sulcus alongside the left anterior descending artery before curving leftward in the atrioventricular (coronary) sulcus. From there, venous drainage tracks posteriorly toward the coronary sinus, which lies in the posterior atrioventricular groove between the left atrium (superior) and left ventricle (inferior). Smaller venules and tributaries are suggested over the ventricular myocardium, while the aortic root and pulmonary trunk provide anterior-superior orientation relative to the atria and ventricles. Color-separated coronary arteries run in parallel with the veins, reinforcing the usual artery-vein pairing along the epicardial fat. Coronary veins matter when arterial anatomy is only half the story. During cardiac resynchronization therapy, the left ventricular lead is advanced through the right atrium into the coronary sinus and then into a lateral or posterolateral vein, so a clear depiction of the coronary sinus course and its relationship to the atrioventricular groove helps explain both technical difficulty and lead stability. Venous anatomy also constrains retrograde cardioplegia delivery and can complicate electrophysiology procedures when a prominent vein of Marshall or variant tributaries alter access. Expect anatomic variation.
