Description
Rendered as a semi-transparent, x-ray style 3D heart, the venous drainage of the myocardium is traced as it converges on the coronary sinus in the posterior atrioventricular (coronary) sulcus. The great cardiac vein ascends from the anterior interventricular sulcus and courses leftward toward the base, while the middle cardiac vein runs in the posterior interventricular sulcus to meet the sinus near its inferior aspect. Along the right margin, the small cardiac vein follows the right atrioventricular groove, and smaller venules on the ventricular surfaces feed into these larger named channels. Coronary arteries are also color-separated, allowing direct comparison of arterial supply and venous return around the atria, ventricles, and roots of the great vessels. Posterior venous anatomy matters when you need a clean mental map of what sits on the diaphragmatic surface of the heart and what can be injured or cannulated there. Coronary sinus cannulation for cardiac resynchronization therapy depends on locating the ostium in the right atrium near the inferior vena cava and the septal leaflet of the tricuspid valve, then navigating tributaries such as the great cardiac vein without perforation.
