Description
Three-quarter head and upper neck are rendered with the left hemiface in natural skin and the right side cleared to reveal the superficial and deep muscles of facial expression and mastication. Laterally, the temporalis fans superior to the zygomatic arch while the masseter sits inferior and posterior to the cheek, spanning from the zygomatic arch to the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus. Across the perioral region, orbicularis oris encircles the mouth as zygomaticus major and minor course inferomedially from the zygomatic bone toward the modiolus, and the platysma continues inferiorly over the anterolateral neck toward the clavicle. The sternocleidomastoid anchors the cervical contour, running obliquely from the mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle. This mixed skin and transparency treatment matters because it preserves surface landmarks while clarifying the layered arrangement that drives expression and jaw function. Clinically, the relationship of masseter and temporalis to the temporomandibular joint helps explain pain patterns in bruxism and guides safe injection planes for masseter hypertrophy management. The cheek musculature shown in situ also maps directly to the course of the buccal and zygomatic branches of the facial nerve, a constant concern during parotidectomy, facelift dissection, and repair of complex cheek lacerations.
